The New York City Fire Department Pension Fund was established in 1941 to provide qualified members and their beneficiaries with retirement, disability and death benefits, primarily based on salary and length of service.

The Office of the New York City Comptroller administers and advises the New York City Fire Department Pension Fund, which is one of five New York City public pension funds.

In June 2014, the pension fund, together with the other institutions that make up the New York City Retirement Systems, approved a ban on placement agents across all asset classes. This is due to previous allegations that investors have been overcharged with their private equity fees.

In May 2018, it was announced that Scott C. Evans, the chief investment officer of the New York City Pension Funds for the last four years, has stepped down from his position, effective 29 June 2018. New York City Comptroller Scott Stringer named Alex Doñé as interim chief investment officer and has launched a formal search for Evans’ replacement.
